You can patch a crack. You can fill a low spot. You can pressure wash the stains away for one more year. But at a certain point, the concrete has failed and no amount of band-aid work is going to bring it back.

Signs it’s time for demolition: multiple cracks running in different directions, sections that have sunk more than an inch below neighboring panels, surface spalling so bad the aggregate is exposed, or tree roots lifting entire slabs off the base. If you’re seeing two or more of those, the slab has reached the end of its life. Concrete repair won’t fix a base that’s washed out or a slab that’s been undermined by roots. Ripping it out and starting over is the honest answer, even though it’s not the one people want to hear.

How Our Concrete Demolition Process Works

People picture a guy with a sledgehammer bashing away at their driveway. That’s not how we do it.

Step one is sawcutting. We use a walk-behind concrete saw to score clean lines around the area being removed. This does two things – gives us a defined edge to break against, and protects the concrete that’s staying. Without a sawcut, cracks travel into the sections you want to keep. Happens all the time when someone tries to demo with just a jackhammer and no perimeter cut.

Next, the breaking. Depending on slab thickness and whether there’s rebar, we use either a pneumatic jackhammer, a skid steer with a breaker attachment, or both. Thin residential slabs – 4 inches, no rebar – break up fast. A 6-inch reinforced driveway takes longer because each chunk stays connected by steel that has to be cut as you go.

Then loading and hauling. Broken concrete goes into a dump trailer or roll-off dumpster parked as close to the work area as we can get it. Less distance to carry means less time on your property and less damage to your yard from foot traffic and wheelbarrows.

Last step is site prep. We grade the exposed subgrade smooth, compact if needed, and leave the area ready for a new pour or whatever you’ve got planned next.

Concrete Demolition for Clearwater Driveways

Driveway tear-outs are our most common demo job. Clearwater has thousands of homes built in the 70s and 80s with original concrete driveways that are at the end of their useful life. Thirty, forty years of Florida sun, rain, and root pressure takes a toll.

A typical two-car driveway removal takes one day. Sometimes two if the slab is thick, heavily reinforced, or the access is tight. Tight access is a real factor in some Clearwater neighborhoods – narrow lots, cars parked on the street, landscaping close to the edges. We plan around all of that. Plywood goes down to protect any grass or pavers we’re working next to. Saw cuts keep the demo zone contained. When we leave, the area where your old driveway was is a clean, graded surface ready for forming and pouring the new one.

Most clients pair demo with a new pour. Makes sense logistically – the equipment is already there, the base is exposed, and we can go straight into prep for the replacement slab without a second mobilization charge.

What We Demolish

Pretty much anything made of concrete on your property.

Driveways. Patios. Sidewalks. Pool decks. Shed pads. Garage floors. Foundation remnants from a structure that was torn down years ago but the slab’s still sitting there. That random concrete pad behind the house nobody remembers the purpose of. Steps. Retaining walls. Old mailbox bases. Curb sections.

Commercial side too. Parking lots, loading dock aprons, warehouse floors, trash pad slabs, old foundation walls. Size doesn’t scare us. We’ve torn out 200-square-foot backyard patios and we’ve torn out commercial lots that took a full week with heavy equipment running all day.

If it’s concrete and you want it gone, call us.

Protecting Your Property During Demo

This is the part most homeowners worry about. Understandable. A skid steer rolling across your front yard is a scary thought.

Here’s how we handle it. Plywood tracks go down wherever equipment needs to drive over grass or soft ground. Landscape fabric or tarps cover anything close to the work zone – bushes, flower beds, irrigation heads. Sawcuts isolate the removal area so vibrations and fractures don’t travel into concrete you’re keeping. And we stage our dump trailer or dumpster on the driveway or street, never on the lawn unless there’s absolutely no other option and you’ve given the green light.

Dust is the other concern. Concrete sawing generates a lot of it. We wet-cut whenever possible, which keeps the dust cloud down to almost nothing. Dry cutting happens sometimes when water isn’t accessible, but we contain it as much as we can.

When the job is done, we sweep or blow off any adjacent surfaces – your remaining concrete, the street, your neighbor’s driveway if debris drifted over. The goal is to leave behind a clean site, not a construction zone.

Clearwater Concrete Demolition Costs

Price depends on four things. Thickness, reinforcement, access, and haul distance. That’s the whole formula.

A 4-inch unreinforced patio slab on a property with easy truck access? That’s the cheapest scenario. Quick to break, easy to load, fast to haul. A 6-inch reinforced driveway with rebar on a lot where the dump trailer has to park 80 feet from the work area? More labor, more time, higher price.

We quote demo jobs after a site visit, not over the phone. Photos help if you want a rough idea before we come out, but the real number comes from seeing the slab in person, checking thickness at a crack or edge, and figuring out how we’re getting equipment in and debris out. Usually takes us 15 minutes on site to put together an accurate quote.

One thing we don’t do is charge by the hour. Every demo quote is a flat price for the full scope – breaking, loading, hauling, disposal, and site cleanup included. No surprise charges when the job takes longer than expected.

Utility Lines and Underground Hazards

Before any demo work starts, we call 811. Every time. No exceptions. Sunshine State One Call marks the underground utilities on your property – water, sewer, gas, electric, cable, irrigation. Takes a few business days but it’s free and it’s required by Florida law.

We’ve shown up to jobs where the homeowner swore there was nothing underground, and there were irrigation lines six inches below the slab. Or an old abandoned gas line that was never properly decommissioned. Finding that stuff with a jackhammer instead of a locate service is dangerous and expensive. The 811 call takes the guesswork out of it.

On commercial jobs, we sometimes do additional private locating with ground-penetrating radar if the site has complex underground infrastructure. Pipe breaks and utility hits shut a job down fast, and repairing them costs real money. A few hundred bucks for a private locate beats a five-figure repair bill every single time.

Partial Demo - Removing Just What Needs to Go

Not everything has to come out. A lot of our Clearwater jobs involve removing specific sections while keeping the rest intact. Three sidewalk panels that heaved from root growth. A corner of a patio where settling caused a crack. One bay of a parking lot that failed while the other nine are still fine.

Partial demo requires more precision. Sawcuts have to be clean and straight. The breaking has to stop at the cut line, not blow past it into good concrete. Transitions between old and new panels need to be flush so you don’t create a trip hazard or a visual mismatch. Our crew does partial removals regularly and knows how to keep the work zone tight without affecting the sections that stay.

This approach saves money. If 30% of your driveway is shot and 70% is solid, there’s no reason to tear out the whole thing. Replace the bad sections, match the finish, and you’ve got a functional driveway again at a fraction of what a full replacement would run.

Concrete Disposal and Recycling

Concrete is heavy. A standard 4-inch driveway slab generates roughly 500 to 600 pounds of debris per square yard. A 600-square-foot driveway tear-out produces around 15,000 pounds of material that has to go somewhere.

We haul everything to licensed disposal or recycling facilities in the Pinellas County area. Most broken concrete gets crushed and recycled into road base or fill material. It’s one of the most recyclable construction materials there is. We don’t dump illegally, we don’t leave debris on your property, and we don’t pile it in a corner of your yard and promise to come back for it next week. It leaves the site the same day in almost every case.

Hauling is built into our demo quotes. You don’t need to rent a dumpster or figure out disposal on your own. That’s our problem, not yours.
